Apocalyptic Virgin and Saint Vincent Ferrer with two Donors by Pedro García de Benavarre

Apocalyptic Virgin and Saint Vincent Ferrer with two Donors

Pedro García de Benavarre·1456

Historical Context

Pedro García de Benavarre's Apocalyptic Virgin and Saint Vincent Ferrer with two Donors, painted around 1456 and now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, combines two of the most powerful devotional subjects of fifteenth-century Aragon. The Apocalyptic Virgin — the Woman Clothed with the Sun from the Book of Revelation — combines Marian devotion with eschatological urgency, while Saint Vincent Ferrer, the Dominican preacher canonized in 1455, was one of the most recently minted saints at the time of the panel's creation, his cult still vivid in popular memory.

Technical Analysis

Tempera on panel with gilded ground. The Apocalyptic Virgin stands on a crescent moon amid radiant golden light with the Christ Child in her arms, surrounded by angels. Saint Vincent Ferrer in Dominican white habit stands at right. Donor figures appear at diminutive scale, kneeling in profile.
