Saint Peter, Saint Claire, Saint James the Great, Saint John the Evangelist
Pere Serra·1385
Historical Context
Pere Serra's panel depicting Saints Peter, Claire, James the Great, and John the Evangelist, painted around 1385, represents the mature Catalan Gothic style that flourished in Barcelona and across the Crown of Aragon. Pere Serra was the most prominent member of a family of painters who dominated Catalan art in the late fourteenth century, producing elaborate altarpiece retables for churches throughout Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Now at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, this panel reflects the distinctive Catalan synthesis of Italianate influence and northern Gothic decorative richness.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel in the Catalan retable tradition, featuring bold contour drawing, rich gilded backgrounds, and the vivid colour harmonies characteristic of the Serra workshop. The four saints are arranged with heraldic clarity, their attributes rendered with decorative precision.
