Saint John the Baptist, Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint James the Minor, Saint Paul
Pere Serra·1385
Historical Context
Pere Serra was one of the most important Catalan Gothic painters, working in Barcelona in the last quarter of the fourteenth century alongside his brother Jaume. This panel depicting Saints John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, James the Minor, and Paul, dating to around 1385, formed part of a retable altarpiece now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Pere's style absorbed Italianate influences, particularly from Sienese painting, which reached Catalonia through the busy Mediterranean trade networks connecting Barcelona with Italian ports.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on panel with gold ground, the four standing saints display Pere Serra's characteristic elegant figural proportions, flowing drapery rhythms, and the refined Italianate modeling that distinguished his work from earlier, more linear Catalan traditions.
