Presentation of Jesus at the Temple
Historical Context
The Master of the Cini Madonna, an anonymous Sienese painter active around 1330, created this Presentation of Jesus at the Temple for devotional use. The subject depicts the moment described in Luke 2:22-40 when the infant Christ was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem, a scene that held deep liturgical significance in medieval worship. Now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the panel reflects the wide diffusion of Sienese Gothic painting across the Mediterranean world.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on panel with gold ground, the composition arranges the figures within a simplified architectural setting representing the Temple interior. The delicate facial types and refined drapery patterns reflect the influence of Duccio and Simone Martini on this anonymous master's style.
