Dormition of the Virgin
Historical Context
This Dormition of the Virgin, painted around 1330 by the Master of the Cini Madonna — an anonymous painter named after a work in the Cini collection in Venice — depicts the moment of the Virgin Mary's death, surrounded by the apostles. The Dormition was one of the most important Marian subjects in medieval art, affirming the belief in Mary's bodily Assumption into heaven. The panel's presence in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya suggests a Catalan or broader Mediterranean provenance.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel with the Virgin shown lying on a bier surrounded by grieving apostles in a compressed, icon-like composition. The style combines Italianate Trecento modeling with elements of the more formal, hieratic tradition, using rich color and gold ground to create a solemn devotional atmosphere.
