Moses receives the Tablets of the Law, from the Chapter House in Sigena
Historical Context
This mural painting depicting Moses receiving the Tablets of the Law comes from the celebrated Chapter House cycle at the Monastery of Sigena in Aragon, created around 1200 by the Master of the Sigena Chapter House. The program drew upon both Old and New Testament narratives in a comprehensive theological scheme. The Sigena murals are considered among the finest examples of transitional Romanesque-Gothic painting in Europe, showing remarkable connections to English manuscript illumination, likely through the patronage of Queen Sancha of Castile.
Technical Analysis
Executed in fresco secco on the chapter house walls, the scene features expressive figural modeling with dynamic drapery and dramatic gestures that transcend Romanesque rigidity. The palette of earth tones enlivened with blue and red, combined with confident drawing and compositional clarity, marks this as one of the most technically accomplished mural cycles in medieval Iberia.
