Resurrection, from the Chapter House in Sigena
Historical Context
This Resurrection scene is part of the celebrated Chapter House mural cycle at the Royal Monastery of Sigena in Aragon, painted around 1200 by the Master of the Sigena chapter house. The program's sophisticated treatment of biblical narrative and its stylistic connections to English illumination make it one of the most significant ensembles of medieval painting in Spain. Like the other Sigena fragments, it was damaged in the 1936 fire and subsequently preserved at the MNAC in Barcelona.
Technical Analysis
Executed in fresco and secco technique on the stone walls of the chapter house, the composition displays the elegant, sinuous line drawing and expressive gestures characteristic of the Sigena master. The figures are modeled with subtle tonal transitions and set against decorative bands that organize the narrative register.
