Virgin Suckling the Child

Second Master of Estopanyà created this work around 1450, now in Barcelona's Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. The depiction of the Virgin and Child was the single most common subject in Italian Renaissance art, serving as a focus for both private devotion and public worship. The Early Renaissance period saw significant artistic innovation across Europe, with painters developing new techniques for representing the visible world with unprecedented naturalism and spatial coherence.
