The Resurrection of Christ
Master of Dreux Budé·1454
Historical Context
The Resurrection of Christ by the Master of Dreux Budé, painted around 1454 and now at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, is attributed to one of the most significant anonymous masters of mid-fifteenth-century French panel painting. The Master of Dreux Budé — named after a patron connected to the surviving works — was active in Paris and represents the hybrid cultural moment when French painting was absorbing Flemish oil technique and naturalism while maintaining connections to the refined courtly tradition of the French Gothic.
Technical Analysis
Oil and tempera on panel. The risen Christ is shown frontally stepping from the tomb with the right hand raised in blessing and the banner of resurrection in the left. The sleeping soldiers below are rendered with attention to their different armor types.
