The Adoration of the Magi

Giovanni Boccati·1440

Historical Context

Giovanni Boccati's Adoration of the Magi, painted around 1440, reflects the distinctive painting tradition of the Marche region. Boccati was among the most important painters of the Marchigian school, combining local traditions with influences absorbed from his travels to Florence and Padua The Adoration of the Magi and Adoration of the Shepherds were popular subjects that allowed artists to combine devotional feeling with elaborate compositions of figures, animals, and landscape.

Technical Analysis

The Epiphany scene features the richly costumed Magi in a landscape setting, rendered with the bright color and detailed observation of costume and landscape that characterize Boccati's contribution to central Italian painting.
