Henry Madsen

Henry Madsen was a Danish painter and close associate of Hammershoi who taught at the same institutions and exhibited in the same circles throughout the 1890s and 1900s. This 1904 portrait at Statens Museum for Kunst — Denmark's national gallery — places a professional likeness within a collection that preserves the major figures of Danish Golden Age and modern painting. Hammershoi painted relatively few formal portraits, preferring the anonymous back-turned female figure of his interior subjects; a named portrait of a colleague therefore represented a departure from his characteristic practice, revealing a direct engagement with a specific individual rather than a type.

Hammershoi's portrait technique employs the same controlled greyed palette as his interiors, avoiding the warmer flesh tones of conventional portrait painting.
