Moonlight, Strandgade 30

Moonlight, Strandgade 30 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art shows the view from the Copenhagen apartment at Strandgade 30 that Hammershoi and his wife Ida occupied from 1898 to 1909, transformed by nocturnal illumination into a scene of hushed, almost theatrical mystery. The canal-side buildings of the Christianshavn neighbourhood, seen across the water at night, gave Hammershoi a subject that combined his interest in architecture and light with the atmospheric potential of moonlight. The work dates to around 1900, when the Strandgade apartment was his primary subject. The Metropolitan's holding places this Danish Symbolist work in dialogue with international modernism.

Nocturnal cityscapes required Hammershoi to work with a severely restricted palette: near-blacks, warm artificial-light yellows, and the pale blue-grey of moonlight on water. The composition is structured through the horizontal canal surface and the vertical rhythm of building reflections.
