Five Portraits. Study for painting in Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm

Hammershøi's 'Five Portraits: Study for Painting in Thielska Galleriet, Stockholm' (1901) is a preparatory work for a commissioned group portrait intended for the renowned Swedish collection assembled by Ernest Thiel. The Thielska Galleriet was one of Scandinavia's most important private art collections, and a commission from Thiel was a mark of the highest cultural recognition. Group portraiture was unusual for Hammershøi, who typically painted solitary figures or empty interiors, and this study shows him working out how to organise multiple individuals with his characteristic compositional stillness. The Statens Museum for Kunst holds this preparatory work.

The five figures are arranged with Hammershøi's characteristic restraint — no theatrical poses or forced interaction, but a quiet coexistence of individual presences. His palette is muted and tonally unified, each figure rendered with equal attention rather than a conventional hierarchy of focal points. The studied quality of the arrangement reflects the careful compositional planning behind his apparently effortless simplicity.
