Hammershøi's 'Near Fortunen, Jægersborg Deer Park, North of Copenhagen' (1901) represents his rare excursion into pure landscape painting, typically less associated with him than his quiet interiors. Jægersborg Deer Park was a historic royal hunting ground north of Copenhagen with an ancient character — old trees, enclosed woodland, and a landscape largely unchanged since the seventeenth century. Hammershøi brings to this landscape the same stillness and tonal restraint he applied to his interiors, the result being a landscape of unusual contemplative depth. The Statens Museum for Kunst holds this as a significant example of his landscape work.

Hammershøi renders the woodland with his characteristic grey-green tonality, the trees standing in a stillness that feels arrested rather than simply quiet. The palette is extremely muted — a narrow range of greens, greys, and warm browns — with no strong colour accents to disturb the contemplative register. Brushwork is smooth and deliberate, giving the forest surface the same cool, reflective quality as his interior walls.
