Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist, Jerome, Peter Martyr, and Bernardino and Four Angels by Sano di Pietro

Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist, Jerome, Peter Martyr, and Bernardino and Four Angels

Sano di Pietro·1425

Historical Context

The Virgin and Child preside over an assembly of four saints and four angels in this devotional panel from around 1425 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sano di Pietro"s early career coincided with the last flowering of the Sienese Gothic tradition, before the influence of Renaissance innovations from Florence gradually modified the city"s distinctive artistic language. The multiple saints and angels reflect the complex devotional requirements of Sienese patrons, who typically specified exactly which saints should flank the central Madonna.

Technical Analysis

The crowded panel is organized with characteristic Sienese elegance, the numerous figures arranged in a decorative pattern that fills the available space without confusion. Gold leaf is applied lavishly to halos, background, and decorative details, creating the luminous, precious surface that Sienese patrons expected. The color harmonies feature the deep reds, blues, and greens traditional to Sienese painting, applied in clear, jewel-like passages. Each saint is identified by specific attributes rendered with miniaturist precision.
