Outer right wing of a triptych with a view in a forest
Gerard David·1550
Historical Context
This outer right wing of a triptych with a view in a forest from 1550 may be a later work from Gerard David's workshop or circle, produced well after the master's death in 1523. The forest landscape on the exterior of altarpiece wings was a common motif in Netherlandish triptychs, visible when the altarpiece was closed. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays luminous oil technique inherited from van Eyck and Memling, serene religious dignity, meticulous surface detail in textiles and landscape, warm compositional clarity.
Technical Analysis
The forest scene is rendered with the careful observation of natural forms typical of the Bruges school, serving as a contemplative exterior when the triptych wings were folded.
