Madonna and Child Enthroned

Fra Antonio da Negroponte created this work around 1455, now in the San Francesco della Vigna. Madonna and Child images were produced in enormous quantities by Renaissance workshops, serving as essential furnishings for churches, chapels, and private households. The Early Renaissance period saw significant artistic innovation across Europe, with painters developing new techniques for representing the visible world with unprecedented naturalism and spatial coherence.

The composition organizes the sacred figures within a carefully balanced spatial arrangement, with the Virgin's blue mantle and the warm flesh tones creating the chromatic harmony traditional in Marian imagery.
