Altarpiece of Saint Vincent
Bernat Martorell·1438
Historical Context
Bernat Martorell's Altarpiece of Saint Vincent, painted around 1438 for the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, celebrates the deacon-martyr of Saragossa who was one of the most venerated saints in the Crown of Aragon. The elaborate retable format was characteristic of Catalan altarpiece commissions. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting. The tension between Gothic grace and Renaissance structure gives art of this period a distinctive energy.
Technical Analysis
The multi-panel retable displays Martorell's command of narrative composition within the compartmentalized format, with each scene painted in rich colors and gold ground that create a unified decorative program.
