12 Scenes of the Apocalypse (triptych altarpiece, left wing, inner) by Master Bertram

12 Scenes of the Apocalypse (triptych altarpiece, left wing, inner)

Master Bertram·1400

Historical Context

Master Bertram of Minden was the most important painter in Hamburg in the last quarter of the fourteenth century, and his Apocalypse panels belong to the tradition of illustrated Revelation cycles that proliferated in German art under the influence of block-book versions and Rhineland manuscript illumination. The Apocalypse triptych, of which this is the inner left wing, presents twelve scenes from the Book of Revelation with the compressed narrative density typical of German altarpiece production. Bertram's style combines the solid figural tradition of North German panel painting with decorative International Gothic refinements acquired through contact with Westphalian and Bohemian painting.

Technical Analysis

Bertram works in tempera with gold grounds, organising multiple scenes within a single panel through architectural framing elements — arches, columns — that divide the narrative into registers. Figure types are solid and Germanic in character, with simplified drapery patterns and direct, frontal poses. The apocalyptic subjects allow for dramatic chromatic contrasts between heavenly gold and earthly scenes.
