Saint Antoine abbé by Pere Lembrí

Saint Antoine abbé

Pere Lembrí·1410

Historical Context

Pere Lembrí's Saint Anthony Abbot panel was likely a wing of a larger altarpiece in which the desert saint appeared alongside other holy figures. Anthony Abbot — the Egyptian hermit who resisted diabolical temptations in the desert — was one of the most popular saints in the Crown of Aragon, invoked for the protection of livestock and as patron of the Order of Saint Anthony that operated hospitals for the poor. His attribute, the tau-cross staff and the pig, identify him as a specific figure distinct from the more doctrinally prominent Anthony of Padua.

Technical Analysis

The panel follows the standard Valencian altarpiece wing format with the saint standing against a gold or patterned ground, rendered in three-quarter view with his identifying attributes prominently displayed. Lembrí's handling shows the Hispano-Flemish synthesis: Flemish-derived oil glazes for flesh, Valencian Gothic decorative patterning in the background, and the broad, confident drapery rendering of the Iberian late Gothic tradition.
