Giovanni Colombini (élément de la prédelle du Retable Rinieri)
Historical Context
Giovanni Colombini, the fourteenth-century Sienese merchant who renounced his wealth to found the Gesuati order, appears here in a predella panel of the Rinieri Altarpiece by Francesco di Antonio di Bartolomeo. The choice of Colombini as a predella subject reflects the Gesuati's growing cult in early fifteenth-century Florence, where the order attracted aristocratic patronage. Predella panels in this period functioned as serial hagiographic programmes, and the Rinieri commission placed Colombini alongside more universally recognized saints, signalling the patron's particular devotional affiliations. Francesco's treatment places him in the conservative Florentine Gothic lineage of Lorenzo Monaco.
Technical Analysis
The panel maintains the restricted height and lateral format of predella construction, with a single standing figure of Colombini rendered against a gold ground. Drapery folds are rendered with thin, calligraphic brushlines characteristic of the late Gothic Florentine workshop tradition. Gilding and incised toolwork define the halo.
