Madonna and Child
Domenico di Bartolo·1436
Historical Context
Domenico di Bartolo was a Sienese painter of the early Quattrocento who is best known today for his remarkable fresco cycle in the Pellegrinaio (hospital ward) of the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, painted from 1440 onward — among the most progressive frescos in Italy for its detailed observation of contemporary hospital life. His Madonna and Child of 1436 belongs to the period just before this ambitious project, when he was developing the unusual combination of Sienese formal elegance with Florentine spatial realism that makes his frescos so compelling.
Technical Analysis
Domenico di Bartolo's panel style absorbs Florentine spatial thinking while maintaining Sienese refinement in color and line. The Madonna is rendered with the psychological directness and physical weight that distinguish his work from the more ethereal Sienese tradition. His glazing technique creates deep, saturated colors that balance Sienese tradition with Florentine substance.
