Waiting by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Waiting

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1887

Historical Context

Lautrec's image of waiting — a woman in a brothel or café context suspended between engagements — distills one of his characteristic subjects: the professional woman at rest, her labor visible in her posture and expression even in repose. Waiting was the defining rhythm of the milieu he depicted, and he returned to it repeatedly as a way of exploring the psychological dimensions of bodies held in suspension between actions. The boredom, fatigue, or private absorption of a waiting figure gave him access to states of female experience that more staged compositions could not reach.

Technical Analysis

The waiting figure's stillness allowed Lautrec to concentrate on posture as psychological revelation — the slump of a chair, the position of hands, the direction of an averted gaze all carrying more emotional weight than facial expression in these repose compositions. His thin paint and cardboard support give the colors a chalky matte quality appropriate to the subject.
