View of the Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute
Historical Context
The view from the Punta della Dogana taking in the Dogana da Mar customs house and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute was one of the canonical panoramas of Venice, reproduced by virtually every significant vedutista of the eighteenth century. Marieschi's version, held in Houston, approaches the subject from a slightly elevated viewpoint that compresses the distance between the customs house and the church, allowing both to share the canvas comfortably. The Dogana, Venice's customs house and toll point for incoming maritime trade, sits at the meeting point of the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal — a literal gateway to the city's commerce. By including both the Dogana's golden globe and weathervane and the Salute's dome in a single view, Marieschi encapsulates Venice's dual identity as mercantile republic and Catholic city. The undated nature of this Houston work makes precise placement within Marieschi's career difficult, but stylistic evidence suggests a date in the later 1730s.
Technical Analysis
Marieschi uses a very low horizon that maximizes the sky area, allowing clouds to balance the architectural mass below. The Dogana's triangular prow shape at the extreme left creates a strong diagonal entry point. Paint handling on the Salute's dome reveals Marieschi's skill in rendering curved stone surfaces through carefully modulated tonal gradations.
Look Closer
- ◆The golden globe and weathervane atop the Dogana catch a sunlit highlight that draws the eye to the left anchor of the composition
- ◆The Salute's enormous dome is foreshortened slightly to fit within the canvas while remaining immediately recognizable
- ◆Canal traffic in the foreground water — gondolas, barges, and a large sailing vessel — encodes Venice's maritime energy
- ◆Clouds above the Salute are arranged to echo the curve of the dome, creating an unconscious visual rhyme between sky and architecture
