The Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute by Michele Marieschi

The Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute

Michele Marieschi·1735

Historical Context

Michele Marieschi (1710–1743) was among the most gifted of the second-generation Venetian vedutisti, working in Canaletto's shadow but developing a distinctive personal style characterised by dramatic chiaroscuro, dynamic brushwork, and a taste for capriccio fantasy alongside topographic views. His 1735 canvas of the Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute, now at the Louvre, depicts the most celebrated view in Venice — the wide sweep of the Canal Grande turning toward the domed Baroque church that Baldassarre Longhena had completed in 1687 as a thanksgiving for Venice's deliverance from plague. By 1735 this view was already a visual cliché for every painter working in Venice, which made Marieschi's decision to approach it a competitive challenge: he needed to assert his own handling against the authority of Canaletto's definitive treatments. His version is characterised by a more theatrical sky and more emphatically defined vessel silhouettes in the foreground than Canaletto's typically even light would allow.

Technical Analysis

Marieschi's handling is more painterly and atmospheric than Canaletto's, with looser brushwork in the sky and water that creates a sense of natural light in flux. The church of Santa Maria della Salute is rendered with careful architectural precision despite the more expressive surrounding treatment. Foreground vessels are painted with strong tonal contrast between sunlit hull sides and deep shadow passages beneath the gunwales.

Look Closer

  • ◆Santa Maria della Salute's paired volutes and central dome are captured with architectural accuracy despite the painterly treatment
  • ◆The Canal Grande's characteristic width is established through carefully controlled recession of vessels into the middle distance
  • ◆Marieschi's sky shows more dramatic cloud formation than Canaletto's typically serene treatments of this view
  • ◆The lantern atop the Salute dome catches a bright highlight that draws the eye upward from the bustling canal below
