The Virgin and Child with angels
Historical Context
Pellegrino di Giovanni's Virgin and Child with Angels, dated 1428, is an early Renaissance devotional panel from the Umbrian school. Pellegrino was a Perugia-based painter who worked in the International Gothic style that still dominated central Italian painting in the early fifteenth century. His refined, decorative approach to religious subjects reflects the conservative artistic environment of Umbria before the revolutionary impact of Florentine innovations.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas shows the elegant, decorative Gothic style with its characteristic gold ground, sinuous linear rhythms, and delicate coloring. The graceful Virgin and the attendant angels demonstrate the refined, courtly aesthetic of the International Gothic tradition.
