Portrait of Ernest de Beveren, Lord of West-IJsselmonde and De Lindt by Aert de Gelder

Portrait of Ernest de Beveren, Lord of West-IJsselmonde and De Lindt

Aert de Gelder·1685

Historical Context

Aert de Gelder painted this portrait of Ernest de Beveren, Lord of West-IJsselmonde and De Lindt, in 1685. De Gelder was the last pupil of Rembrandt and one of the few artists to maintain the master's late style well into the eighteenth century. His commitment to Rembrandt's rich, expressive technique made him unfashionable during his lifetime but has earned him recognition as a significant artist in his own right.

Technical Analysis

De Gelder's portrait demonstrates his inheritance of Rembrandt's late manner with its warm palette, heavy impasto, and dramatic lighting. The bold, rough brushwork and rich color harmonies show his loyalty to the Rembrandt tradition at a time when most Dutch painters had adopted the smoother, more classical style.
