Portrait of a Young Man in Red
Giovanni Bellini·c. 1480
Historical Context
Bellini's Portrait of a Young Man in Red (c. 1480) at the National Gallery of Art exemplifies the crucial role he played in developing Venetian portraiture, bridging the medieval tradition of profile portraits toward the psychologically penetrating three-quarter format that would characterize High Renaissance portraiture. The red garment, rendered with Bellini's luminous oil technique, establishes the sitter's social identity through color while the three-quarter pose and the direct but measured gaze create a psychological presence. Bellini absorbed the influence of Antonello da Messina's visits to Venice in the late 1470s and the Flemish technique Antonello brought north, transforming Venetian painting's technical foundations.
Technical Analysis
Bellini's combined oil and tempera technique on panel creates luminous flesh tones and rich color, with the red garment rendered in warm, saturated hues against a simple background that focuses attention on the sitter's features.
Provenance
Possibly Andrea Vendramin, Venice, by 1627.[1] Count Manfred von Ingenheim [b. 1896], Ober-Rengersdorf, Germany; (Duveen Brothers, Inc., London and New York); purchased February 1930 by Andrew W. Mellon, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.; deeded 28 December 1934 to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust, Pittsburgh;[2] gift 1937 to NGA. [1] Tancred Borenius, "More about the Andrea Vendramin Collection," _Burlington Magazine_ 9, no. 348 (March 1932): 145, pl. 2A, first suggested that the NGA portrait may be identified with a picture attributed to Bellini in the illustrated inventory of the paintings in the collection of Andrea Vendramin compiled in 1627 (see Tancred Borenius, _The Picture Gallery of Andrea Vendramin_, London, 1923: pl. 10). [2] Mellon purchase date and date deeded to Mellon Trust are according to Mellon collection files in NGA curatorial records and David Finley's notebook (donated to the National Gallery of Art in 1977, now in the Gallery Archives).
