The Presentation in the Temple

Alvaro Pirez d'Evora was a Portuguese painter who worked in Italy in the early fifteenth century, one of the few documented Portuguese artists active abroad during this period. This Presentation in the Temple, painted around 1405-15, combines Italian Gothic painting conventions with elements that may reflect his Iberian training. His work documents the artistic exchanges between Portugal and Italy in the early Renaissance.

The tempera and gold on wood follows Italian Gothic conventions with gold-ground treatment and carefully modeled figures in an architectural setting. The precise execution and decorative surface demonstrate competent workshop practice in the International Gothic manner.
