Virgin and Child Enthroned with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin by Morata Master

Virgin and Child Enthroned with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin

Morata Master·1470

Historical Context

The Morata Master, named after the town near Zaragoza, was an Aragonese painter active around 1470 who created altarpieces combining Flemish-influenced realism with the gold-ground traditions of Spanish Gothic painting. This elaborate panel of the Virgin and Child enthroned with scenes from the Life of the Virgin reflects the rich altarpiece traditions of the Crown of Aragon, where Flemish influence arrived through trade connections.

Technical Analysis

The tempera and gold on wood combines elaborate gold tooling with detailed narrative scenes in the International Gothic manner. The rich surface decoration and precise figural painting demonstrate the high standards of Aragonese altarpiece workshops.
