The Adoration of the Magi
Joos van Wassenhove·1472–74
Historical Context
Joos van Wassenhove (Justus of Ghent) painted this Adoration of the Magi in 1472-74, during his years at the court of Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino. Van Wassenhove was a Netherlandish painter who emigrated to Italy, bringing the meticulous oil technique of the Bruges school to the Italian court. His work at Urbino, alongside Piero della Francesca and Melozzo da Forlì, created a unique artistic environment where Northern and Italian traditions merged.
Technical Analysis
The distemper on canvas demonstrates Van Wassenhove's Northern European precision applied to an Italian commission, combining Flemish detail in faces and fabrics with the spatial grandeur of Italian Renaissance composition. The luminous quality of the pigments and the precise handling of light reflect his Bruges training.
