The Adoration of the Magi by Hieronymus Bosch

The Adoration of the Magi

Hieronymus Bosch·ca. 1475

Historical Context

This early Adoration of the Magi by Hieronymus Bosch, painted around 1475, shows the young artist working in a relatively conventional mode before developing his famous fantastical imagery. The scene of the three kings presenting gifts to the Christ child was among the most frequently depicted subjects in Netherlandish painting. Even in this early work, Bosch introduces subtle eccentricities in the background figures and architectural details that hint at the bizarre, morally charged visual world he would later create in masterpieces like The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Technical Analysis

Executed in oil and gold on oak panel, this early Bosch work reveals a painter still grounded in the precise, detailed technique of the Netherlandish tradition, with careful gold-leaf application for the gifts and decorative elements, and meticulous rendering of textile patterns.
