Retable of Saints Athanasius, Blaise, and Agatha
Master of Riglos·c. 1440–c. 1445
Historical Context
The Master of Riglos painted this retable of Saints Athanasius, Blaise, and Agatha around 1440-45, a multi-panel altarpiece from the kingdom of Aragon. Named after works in the church of Riglos in Huesca province, this anonymous master represents the International Gothic style as practiced in northeastern Spain. The three saints — a bishop, a healer, and a virgin martyr — provided protection against specific ailments and dangers for the local community.
Technical Analysis
The tempera on panel demonstrates the rich, decorative quality of Aragonese Gothic painting with bright colors, gold ground, and elaborate textile patterns. The figures are rendered with the characteristic combination of stylized elegance and devotional directness that defines the Hispano-Gothic tradition.
