Saints Peter and Paul
El Greco·1587
Historical Context
Saints Peter and Paul (c. 1587–92) in the Hermitage Museum is another treatment of the apostolic pair that El Greco painted multiple times. This version shows the mature Toledo style at its most commanding — the figures' elongated forms and intense expressions creating a sense of spiritual power that transcends the physical. Peter's weathered face and Paul's more intellectual bearing are rendered with a portrait-like individuality that makes the theological archetypes feel humanly present. The Hermitage version is considered among the finest of El Greco's treatments of this subject, with the two figures' contrasting temperaments clearly differentiated through pose, expression, and color.
Technical Analysis
The contrasting characterizations of the two apostles, with Peter's aged vulnerability and Paul's intellectual force, are rendered in El Greco's mature palette of warm flesh tones against cool, dark backgrounds.
