Samois, Study No. 13, The Seine
Paul Signac·1899
Historical Context
Samois, Study No. 13, The Seine (1899) is part of Signac's serial study of the river at Samois, each work documenting a specific variation of light, weather, or season along the same stretch of water. The numbered-study format reflects his methodical approach, inherited from Seurat's own systematic preparation of large canvases from oil studies. By 1899 Signac had also published his major theoretical treatise D'Eugène Delacroix au Néo-Impressionnisme, consolidating divisionism's intellectual framework. Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
Technical Analysis
The river study employs Signac's evolving larger mosaic stroke technique, with the Seine rendered in horizontal bands of varied cool hues reflecting sky and vegetation. The serial approach allowed direct comparison of chromatic strategies across identical subjects under different conditions.
