Nativity
Historical Context
The Master of the Trebon Altarpiece, the greatest anonymous painter of the Bohemian school, created this Nativity panel around 1380 as part of an altarpiece cycle that represents the pinnacle of Czech Gothic painting. The Trebon master worked in the sophisticated artistic milieu of Prague under the late Luxembourg dynasty, producing works of extraordinary lyrical beauty and spiritual depth. This Nativity panel, now in the Ales South Bohemian Gallery, displays the soft, luminous style that influenced Central European painting for decades.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera on panel with gold ground, the Nativity scene employs the Beautiful Style of Bohemian Gothic painting with its gentle modeling, soft atmospheric effects, and lyrical figure types. The characteristic dark, richly saturated palette with its luminous highlights and the tender, intimate treatment of the sacred figures mark the highest achievement of the Prague school.
