Landscape Study from Mora
Anders Zorn·1886
Historical Context
Anders Zorn's Landscape Study from Mora (1886) depicts the Swedish town of Mora in Dalarna — the region that Zorn, one of Sweden's greatest painters, would eventually make his home and from which he would draw much of his most celebrated imagery. Mora's lakeside setting and the traditional Dalarna folk culture provided material for some of his most significant Swedish subjects. This early landscape study predates his mature Mora period but shows him beginning to engage with the landscape that would become central to his artistic identity.
Technical Analysis
Zorn's landscape study from Mora shows his developing mastery of outdoor light and atmospheric effect. His technique in landscape subjects combines his watercolor training's sensitivity to tonal relations with the direct oil painting approach he was developing. The palette captures the specific quality of Swedish Dalarna light — clear and northern, the lake surface reflecting the sky. Brushwork is direct and observational, appropriate to a study rather than a finished exhibition work.
