On the Shore of the Gulf of Finland (Udrias near Narva), Study (1888) is a plein-air study preceding Ivan Shishkin's larger canvas on the same subject. Shishkin was Russia's dominant landscape painter, known for his detailed, almost scientific observation of the Russian and Baltic natural world. This study captures the quality of the Udrias coastal landscape — the characteristic Estonian klint coast where limestone cliffs meet the sea — with the freedom of outdoor observation. His studies are often as admired as his finished works, showing a directness and freshness not always present in the more labored final versions.

The study quality is visible in the freshness of the handling — rapid, confident marks recording light effects and tonal relationships before they shift.
