Enthroned Madonna with Child and four saints, above the Crucifixion with Mary and John Ev.
Historical Context
Cristoforo di Bindoccio, a Sienese painter active in the late 14th century, created this double-register panel around 1387, combining an enthroned Madonna and Child with four saints below and a Crucifixion with the Virgin and St. John above. This compact format allowed a single panel to serve the devotional function of a full altarpiece in smaller chapels or oratories. Cristoforo often collaborated with his partner Meo di Pero, and their joint workshop produced numerous altarpieces for churches in and around Siena.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera with gold ground on panel, the work shows the characteristically refined Sienese approach to Gothic painting with its emphasis on elegant line, decorative patterning, and luminous color. The two-register composition is efficiently organized within the panel's vertical format.
