St. Anthony Abbot Enthroned
Spinello Aretino·1385
Historical Context
Spinello Aretino's St. Anthony Abbot Enthroned, painted around 1385, depicts one of the most venerated saints of the Gothic period — the desert father whose cult was associated with healing, particularly of skin diseases. Spinello was one of the most prolific and accomplished late Trecento painters in Tuscany, working across Arezzo, Florence, Pisa, and Siena. His robust figural style bridged the generation between Giotto's followers and the early Renaissance innovators.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and gold on panel, the enthroned saint is rendered with the weighty monumentality characteristic of Spinello's mature style. The rich brocade patterns of the saint's robes are achieved through sgraffito and tooled gilt surfaces, demonstrating sophisticated late Gothic decorative techniques.
