Study for "Bathers at Asnières"

Painted around 1880 and now at the Cleveland Museum of Art, this early panel study for a bathers composition predates the known 1883 studies by several years, placing it among the very earliest surviving evidence of Seurat's long engagement with the subject. At this stage—still in his student years at the École des Beaux-Arts—Seurat was studying Ingres and the classical tradition of the nude, and his early figure studies reflect an academic formation that his later systematic colour theory would transform rather than abandon. The Cleveland panel gives rare insight into the deep origins of a major work.

The early panel shows a hand still working within conventional academic figure-drawing traditions, with the systematic colour application of mature pointillism absent. The figures are established through conventional modelling and tone, revealing the academic foundation on which Seurat's later radicalism was built.
