Portrait of Prince Louis of Spain
Jean Ranc·1723
Historical Context
Jean Ranc was a French painter who served as court portraitist to Philip V of Spain, and his Portrait of Prince Louis of Spain from 1723 depicts the future Louis I of Spain, who briefly reigned as king in 1724 before dying of smallpox at age seventeen. Ranc succeeded Rigaud and van Loo as the principal portrait painter at the Spanish Bourbon court, bringing the French grand manner of portraiture to Madrid. This portrait would have been produced in anticipation of Louis's elevation, capturing the prince in the formal mode of Spanish royal portraiture grafted onto French Rococo elegance.
Technical Analysis
Ranc follows the conventions of formal royal portraiture — erect bearing, court dress, and accessories signifying royal rank — while applying the lighter, more fluid handling of his French training. The combination gives the portrait a formal authority softened by Rococo refinement.
