This interior scene from Brøndum's Hotel in Skagen (1888) depicts the famous gathering place of the Skagen artists' colony, the fishing village at the northern tip of Denmark that attracted Scandinavian painters from the late 1870s onwards. Krohg was a central figure in the Skagen community, and this painting is a document of the social and creative world that gathered around Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer, and the group's wider circle.
