Braiding her Hair by Christian Krohg

Braiding her Hair

Christian Krohg·1888

Historical Context

Braiding her Hair (1888) belongs to a group of intimate domestic figure studies that Christian Krohg produced during the late 1880s, capturing women in private, unobserved moments of daily grooming. After his major socially engaged canvases of the early decade — including his controversial series on the Oslo prostitute Albertine — Krohg also produced quieter works focusing on physical beauty and everyday feminine life. These paintings drew on French Naturalist precedents, particularly Degas's figures seen in candid action, but Krohg brought a Norwegian directness and sympathy to the subject. The work is distinguished by its unselfconscious intimacy.

Technical Analysis

Krohg handles the figure with assured drawing, integrating it into a warm interior light. The treatment of the woman's hair — both as subject and as painterly challenge — is central, rendered with careful observation of how light plays across different textures. Brushwork is fluid and economical.
