Triptych: The Madonna of Humility (centre); The Nativity (left); The Crucifixion (right); The Annunciation (top left and right)
Francescuccio Ghissi·1366
Historical Context
This triptych by Francescuccio Ghissi, dated around 1366, combines several key Marian and Christological subjects: the Madonna of Humility at center, the Nativity and Crucifixion on the wings, and an Annunciation in the upper registers. Ghissi was an artist from the Marche region of Italy who worked in the orbit of Allegretto Nuzi, producing polyptychs and altarpieces for churches along the Adriatic coast. The triptych format made it portable and suitable for private chapels or traveling clergy.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera and gold on three hinged wooden panels, the triptych employs the intimate scale and jewel-like finish typical of portable devotional objects. The delicate figures, tooled gold grounds, and miniaturist detail in the subsidiary scenes reflect the refined craftsmanship of Marchigian Gothic workshops.
