The Rt Hon. William McEwan MP (1827-1913) by Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant

The Rt Hon. William McEwan MP (1827-1913)

Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant·1900

Historical Context

This portrait of William McEwan MP (1827–1913), dated 1900 and held by the National Trust, depicts one of the most prominent Scottish businessmen and Liberal politicians of the late Victorian era. McEwan founded McEwan's Brewery in Edinburgh in 1856, building it into one of the largest brewing enterprises in Britain, and served as a Liberal MP for Edinburgh South from 1885 to 1900. He was also a major philanthropist, funding the McEwan Hall at Edinburgh University (opened 1897) and later donating £100,000 to the University of London. Commissioning his portrait from Benjamin-Constant was a deliberate act of social aspiration: by 1900, the French painter had become the preferred portraitist of British and American elites who sought to associate themselves with the prestige of French academic culture. Benjamin-Constant's American and British portrait commissions in the 1890s and early 1900s represented the commercial peak of his career, and McEwan's commission is typical of this trans-Atlantic grand-manner portraiture practice.

Technical Analysis

The formal portrait employs the full apparatus of grand-manner tradition: three-quarter length, commanding posture, and a setting that implies status without detailed description. Benjamin-Constant's mature technique of confident, broad brushwork in the figure contrasted with a more sketchy background achieves the combination of presence and atmosphere his sitters desired.

Look Closer

  • ◆McEwan's prosperous bearing and formal dress encode the self-made businessman's arrival at the pinnacle of Victorian social respectability.
  • ◆The chair or setting elements visible in the composition function as props of social status, following a portrait convention that McEwan would have consciously chosen.
  • ◆Benjamin-Constant achieves likeness through the concentrated rendering of facial features while treating the figure's body with greater freedom.
  • ◆The portrait's ambitious scale and polished surface announce its function as a public statement of the sitter's importance, not merely a private record.
