Historical Context
'Temptation (Adam and Eve),' painted by Milan Thomka Mitrovský around 1900, engages the oldest biblical narrative in the Western tradition—the fall from Eden—at a moment when Slovak painters were navigating between religious iconography and Symbolist reinvention. Thomka Mitrovský, trained in Budapest and Munich, brought a Central European Symbolist sensibility to this timeless subject, placing greater emphasis on psychological tension than on theological moralising. The Slovak National Gallery preserves his work as part of its survey of pre-modern Slovak painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition is arranged to emphasise the physical proximity and moral opposition of the two figures, with the serpent serving as a compositional third element. The palette and handling reflect his Munich academic training filtered through Symbolist atmospheric concerns.
