Mountain Meadow
Lajos Csordák·1900
Historical Context
Csordák's 'Mountain Meadow' of around 1900 depicts the high-altitude pastoral landscape of the Spiš region, where summer grazing land opens above the treeline. As a painter who spent extended periods working directly in this terrain, Csordák brought topographic accuracy to his mountain scenes—he knew the specific quality of light at altitude, the colours of alpine flora, and the way distant peaks recede in aerial haze. This intimate knowledge distinguishes his work from painters who reconstructed mountain scenery from sketches in urban studios. The Slovak National Gallery holds the work.
Technical Analysis
The high meadow is rendered with varied, short strokes that evoke the texture of alpine grasses, contrasting with the smoother, broader treatment of the sky. The cooler blue-grey tones in the distant hills create effective aerial perspective.
