Holy Trinity with the Virgin and Saints Mary Magdalen, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist
Historical Context
This Holy Trinity with the Virgin and Saints by the Master of the Ashmolean Predella, painted around 1390, presents a Throne of Grace Trinity — God the Father holding the crucified Christ — surrounded by the Virgin, Mary Magdalen, and Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The anonymous master, named for a predella panel in Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, was a Florentine painter working in the orbit of Agnolo Gaddi. Such complex theological compositions served as the central images of major church altarpieces in late Trecento Florence.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel, the symmetrical composition demonstrates the Florentine Gothic approach to organizing multiple figures within a unified devotional image. The careful spatial layering and monumental figure proportions reflect the enduring influence of the Giottesque tradition in late fourteenth-century Florentine workshops.
