The Annunciation
Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini painted this Annunciation around 1385, depicting the archangel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would bear the Son of God. The Annunciation was one of the most theologically charged subjects in Gothic art, representing the moment of the Incarnation and the beginning of human salvation. Gerini, a pillar of the conservative Florentine painting tradition, received numerous commissions for such fundamental devotional subjects from churches and confraternities.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the composition follows the established Gothic format with Gabriel and the Virgin facing each other across a defined architectural or spatial divide. Gerini's measured draftsmanship and clear figural articulation make the theological narrative legible and authoritative.
